Twitter Tips for Small BusinessFinding relevant Twitter content

So after last week’s post, now you’ve got some momentum going on Twitter. The next questions are, What are we going to tweet about all the time? Where are we going to get good content—and enough content—to keep this going? Compendium.com contributor and account management director Clayton Stobbs suggests two more important questions:

  • Where does your industry get its news?
  • Where do your customers get their news?

With these as your starting point, Stobbs lays out six ways to find relevant Twitter content:

  1. Industry news
  2. Local, regional and national news
  3. Twitter trends
  4. Influencer and competitor listening
  5. Google
  6. Your own “owned” media channels (blog, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.)

Twitter content moves quickly, Stobbs points out, so it’s important to tweet regularly, keep a content calendar and use a publishing tool to stay on top of it. Be sure to click the link above to read Stobbs’ narrative on each of these content sources.

Advertising on Twitter to build awareness

If you’re a newbie or a traditionalist, Twitter may not be your first thought when it comes to your advertising strategy. For a while, Twitter wasn’t an advertising channel, but now it is, with a variety of options for businesses. Contributor Kristi Hines describes the setup process and creating a Twitter ad campaign on kissmetrics.com’s blog.

Hines walks readers through signing into Twitter Advertising and the prompts on the welcome page in detail (click the link above). From there, she offers up descriptions of the Twitter advertising options available and suggests you watch the introductory video on Twitter for small business.

The three types of Twitter advertising options include:

  • Promoted accounts, which allows you to promote your account to potential followers. Good for:
    • Expanding your profile exposure
    • Building followers
    • Helping people discover you
  • Promoted tweets, which allows you to build exposure by highlighting a particular status update. Good for:
    • Sharing content
    • Building awareness
    • Building a brand voice
  • Promoted trends, which are topics and hashtags that are moved to the top of the “Trending Topics” list. Good for:
    • Building mass awareness for product launches
    • Building mass awareness for events
    • Brand building by association

Don’t skip reading all the great details here! More and more businesses are using Twitter as a social media and even a marketing anchor—you just may want to join them.
